Oscars Rant 2020

Oscars Ceremony:
Sunday, February 9, 2020
8 PM
No Host

On the red carpet Janelle Monae wears an amazing Ralph Lauren silver, beaded, hooded dress.  So unique and elegant.

8 pm: Janelle Monae is the opening number.  She dresses up as Mister Rogers.  Her front button is open  and she quickly closes it. Billy Porter joins her on stage singing the Elton John song "I'm Still Standing" in a  huge gold beaded long trained coat.  Monae lays on the floor and belts out a song.

The "Not Hosts": Steve Martin and Chris Rock come out.  Both former hosts.  They say no one wants to host because of twitter.  So true. and so annoying.  No one has a sense of humor anymore.  They mock Jeff Bezos' divorce and Martin Scorsese's movie "The Irishman" for being so long.  Funny jokes, Vaginas are missing from the best director nominees.

8:11 pm: Regina King looks amazing in a pink and silver gown by Versace. Beautiful long train. One of my best dressed.  She presents for Best Supporting Actor.  The award goes to Brad Pitt for his role in "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood".  Four time nominee, first time winner.  Joe Pesci who is nominated, is not present.

I hate the Christian Siriano black dress Kelly Ripa is wearing.  It is so much fabric for such a petite woman.  It is swallowing her up.  Bad choice.

8:23 pm: Mindy Kaling looks great in a yellow off the shoulder Dolce and Gabbana gown. Such a fabulous color against her skin tone.  She presents Best Animated film to "Toy Story 4". "Klaus" was also a very cute animated movie.

Loving Christine Lahti simple red crossed at the chest Romona Keveza dress.  very age appropriate. She looks stunning!

8:30 pm: Idina Menzel sings the nominated song "Into the Unknown" from Frozen II.  I do not like the white dress she is performing in.  It has huge sleeves. The song is very nice.  I like that they had multiple woman on stage singing the song in languages from ALL over the world. Sweet.

On the red carpet Idina was wearing a hot pink dress by J.Mendel.  I didn't love it.  It was too heavy looking.

8:36 pm: Diane Keaton presenting for Best Original Screenplay with Keanu Reeves.  She is wearing her usual very unique wardrobe.  A long flannel white and gray coat with a big black belt and a huge black hat.  She's so flakey.  This is VERY early in the show to be presenting this award.  Bong Joon Ho wins for "Parasite".

8:42 pm: Natalie Portman and Timothee Chalamet present for Best Adapted Screenplay.  They are both on my WORST dressed list.  Natalie's black Dior dress has a gold pattern down the center that looks like a swarm of bugs.  And Timothee is basically wearing a navy tracksuit made by Prada.  Taika Waititi wins for "Jo Jo Rabbit". Well deserved.

Not liking Rooney Mara's sheer and lace black Alexander McQueen dress.  I usually love his looks but this dress has these big cut outs exposing her ribs.  Her hair is just pulled back in a bun.

8:54 pm: WOW! just wow.  But am I really shocked?? Maya Rudolph and Kristen Wiig walk on stage.  The producers somehow figured out how to find the two comedians who are perpetually known for being the worst dressed and put them together to present.  And tonight they have not let us down.  Both have absolutely no fashion sense and clearly NO stylist.  Maya as usual is wearing a giant sack.  Only this time it is orange sequined and designed by Valentino. I don't know why she choices to wear such large, unshapely, unflattering dresses.  Kristen Wiig's red long trained dress with the ruffles down the legs looks like a vacuum or a car wash or a vagina. So confused. and the long, black leather gloves.  Terrible outfit also designed by Valentino.  Perhaps they went shopping together! Either way their dresses are funnier than their little act.  So goofy.

8:58 pm: "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" wins best production design.
"Little Women" wins best costume design.

Hate Greta Gerwig's strapless, army green Christian Dior gown.  Not flattering at all.  She's looked so washed up lately.

9:08 pm: Best Documentary Feature goes to Netflix's "American Factory".

9:15 pm: The handsome Mahershala Ali presents for Best Supporting Actress.  Laura Dern wins for "Marriage Story".   Not a fan of her pale pink and black Armani Prive dress.  There are tassels dangling under her breasts that make her look like a walking lamp shade. Three time nominee, first win. She says "This is the best birthday present!" She was born on February 10, 1967.

9:26 pm: Are these presenters for the presenters necessary??

HATE Saoirse Ronan's odd Gucci dress.  Its like they sewed it in the dark.  Does this dress have schizophrenia.  It's two different dresses.  It's black and white on top and light purple one bottom.  One of my worst dressed. She's nominated and she should know better.

9:30 pm: I think everyone is just speechless when Eminem shows up on stage to sing the Oscar winning song "Lose Yourself" from his film "8 Mile".  Eminem was not present at the Oscars when he won in 2003.  Barbra Streisand sounded quite shocked when she announced his win. That was 17 years ago. He looks very handsome and healthy.  He puts on an awesome performance.  Standing ovation.  Good for him.

I love the turquoise colored Louis Vuitton dress that Florence Pugh is wearing, but I don't love all the layers.  I wish it had been a one straight piece of fabric to the ground.

9:36 pm: Oscar Issacs and Salma Hayek present for sound editing.  She looks very elegant in a white one sleeved, toga looking Gucci dress.  The Oscar goes to "Ford Vs. Ferrari".  Sound mixing goes to "1917".

9:42 pm: the wonderful Randy Newman performs "I Can't Let You Throw Yourself Away" from "Toy Story 4".

9:50 pm: Will Farrell and Julia Louis-Dreyfus present for cinematography. Now these two are funny.  They are acting like they have no idea what a cinematographer does.  I love her simple navy Vera Wang dress.  Great hair and jewelry. one of my best dressed. The VERY talented Roger Deakins wins for "1917".  well deserved.  "Ford Vs. Ferrari" wins for film editing.

Shocker Charlize Theron is wearing a Dior dress.  Well, at least it is a simple black, one off the shoulder dress.  So much better than the Golden Globe dress.

10:05 pm: Cynthia Erivo performs her song "Stand Up" from the movie "Harriet".  Nice song. This gold dress with a huge royal-like high collar is so much nicer than the dress she wore on the red carpet.  Although her Atelier Versace white dress was unique, it kinda looked like a torture chamber for her breasts.

Love Kathy Bates navy and black suit.  Very flattering. She's one of my best dressed.

10:12 pm: James Corden and Rebel Wilson come out dressed in costumes from "Cats".  Funny.  I loved her gold sequined Jason Wu gown she wore on the red carpet. She looked so old Hollywood. "1917" wins for best visual effects.

10:16 pm: Sondra Oh's champagne color, sequined Elia Saab dress would look so much better if it lost the huge puffy sleeves.  She and Ray Romano present for best hair and make-up.  Such a important category.  "Bombshell" wins.

I am underwhelmed by Margot Robbie's black Chanel dress.  She has this huge broach right in the center of her chest.  Wish she had tossed it.

10:24 pm: Penelope Cruz's dress is meh.  I'm not crazy about this black, tied around the neck Chanel dress.  It has pearls around the waist and a white flower at the collar.  They look like afterthoughts.  Best International (not foreign) Film goes to "Parasite."

10:27 pm: Elton John performs his song "I'm Gonna Love Me Again" from his biopic "Rocketman".
He wears pink glasses and a purple suit.

Love, love Scarlett Johansson's champagne colored Oscar de la Renta dress.  It looks rustic, worn and torn, yet classy and elegant.  Original, hip and beautiful.

10:37 pm: Brie Lawson, Sigourney Weaver, and Gal Gadot walk out on stage.  I love Brie's champagne stripped Celine dress with the matching cape.  Gal's pink and black lace Givenchy dress is just ok. Because it had such a high collar I did not find the diamond necklace over her neck necessary.  Now Sigourney's green draped Grecian like Christian Dior dress is so frumpy.  With the long sleeves and the rope belt.  Yikes.

First year to have a Female conductor named Eimear Noone conduct a segment of the show.  "Joker" wins Best score.  Creepy music.

10:45 pm: Elton John wins Best Original Song from "Rocketman".

10: 51 pm: Spike Lee is wearing a sharp purple and yellow suit with the number 24 on it in memory of basketball player Kobe Bryant who died two weeks ago on January 26. Bong Joon Ho wins Best Director. "Parasite" has won three major awards so far. Cleaning up.

Geena Davis looks great in a black Romona Keveza dress.  I wish the slit in the front of the chest was a bit shorter.  She was awarded the 2020 Jean Hersholt Humanitarian award.

10:56 pm: Steven Spielberg presents the "In Memoriam" segment of the show.  I hate that it is so late in the show.  I hate they put two names on the screen at once.  It seems rushed. Pay some respect to these people!  Billie Eilish sings "Yesterday". Beautiful. I do not like her neon green hair but her black sequin outfit is so much better than the baggy white Chanel suit she wore on the red carpet.

Sid Haig, Luke Perry, Michael J. Pollard, and Bill Macy are just a few people left out of the "In Memoriam" segment.

11:03 pm: Olivia Coleman, always on my worst dressed list but I love her anyway.  very odd navy and white Christopher Kane velvet dress with big buttons on the shoulders and what looks like, I can only describe as air holes or vents for her armpits.  She presents for Best Actor.  Joaquin Phoenix wins for his role in "Joker".  Four time nominee, first win.  He speaks out about being vegan and climate control.  He vowed to wear the same tux to all the 2020 award shows.

Do not like Lucy Boynton's black and white Chanel dress. It would look a million times better if she ripped off the sleeves.

11:10 pm: 10 Minutes over time.  The very talented Rami Malek presents for Best Actress.  Renee Zellwegger wins for her role in "Judy".  Four time nominee, second win.   I love her simple white Armani Prive one sleeved dress.

11:22 pm: 22 minutes over.  Jane Fonda presents for Best Picture.  She looks absolutely amazing in a very stunning red sheen Elie Saab dress.  to  make a statement about climate control she rewore a dress she wore to the 2014 Cannes festival.  Good for her.  I love thrift shops.  "Parasite" wins best picture.  Making it the first movie ever to win both best foreign film and Best Picture.  It also won best director and best original screenplay.  Fonda looks shocked.  We all do.  WOW!

The End.  See you next year.

BEST DRESSED: Scarlett Johansson
WORST DRESSED: Saoirse Ronan
