Stolen Oscars

Listed by year movie was released.  I'm picking just from what movies were nominated that year. Some of my favorite movies like "Thelma and Louise" wasn't even up for Best Picture. Shame.

Sometimes the decision is so hard but these I am sure of:

1939- Best Picture was "Gone with the Wind" should have gone to "The Wizard of Oz".

1941: "How Green Was My Valley" won best picture should have gone to "Citizen Kane".

1947- Best Picture went to "Gentleman's Agreement", should have gone to "Miracle on 34th Street".

1950- Best Picture went to "All About Eve" should have definitely gone to "Sunset Blvd."

1952- Best Picture went to "The Greatest Show on Earth" should have gone to "High Noon". But Cecil B. DeMille produced and directed "The Greatest..." so you can see why it won.

1957: Best Picture went to "The Bridge on the River Kwai" and it should have gone to "12 Angry Men".

1963- Best picture went to "Tom Jones", should have gone to "Cleopatra" or "Lilies of the Field".  Anything other than this RUBBISH.

1968- Oilver Reed should have won Best Supporting Actor for his terrifying portrayal of Bill Sykes in "Oliver!"

1969- Best Picture was "Midnight Cowboy" should have gone to "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid".

1971- Best Picture was "The French Connection," should have gone to "A Clockwork Orange." No if, ands, or buts. It was a more entertaining and interesting movie.

1979- Best Picture was "Kramer V. Kramer," should have gone to "Norma Rae." It had so much more meaning behind it.

1981- Best Picture was "Chariots of Fire," I didn't like many of the movies nominated that year but I would have settled for "Raiders of the Lost Ark" first before the others. At least it kept me awake.

1987- Best Picture was "The Last Emperor" it should have been "Hope and Glory"

1989- Best Picture was "Driving Miss. Daisy" It should have been "Steel Magnolias".  Sally Field should have been nominated for Best Supporting Actress for "Steel Magnolias".

1990- Best Picture was "Dances With Wolves" should have been "Good Fellas". I mean, which one do you watch every time it's on tv??

1991- "Thelma and Lousie" should have been nominated for Best Picture.

1995- Best Actor went to Nicolas Cage for "Leaving Las Vegas," and it should have gone to Sean Penn for "Dead Man Walking." One of the most moving and believable roles ever.

1996- Best Picture was "The English Patient," and should have gone to one of my most favorite movies, "Fargo." The whole cast is priceless.

1998- One of the BIGGEST disappointments. Best Picture was, "Shakespeare in Love," It should have been "Saving Private Ryan." Every other movie nominated that year including "Elizabeth," and "Life is Beautiful," deserved it more.

1998- Best Actress was Gwyneth Paltrow from "Shakespeare in Love" which was STOLEN from Cate Blanchett for "Elizabeth." She sent chills through me.

2000- Best Actress was Julia Roberts who won for "Erin Brockovitch," or did her breasts win? Either way it should have been Ellen Burstyn for "Requiem for a Dream." Best supporting actor went to Benicio Del Toro for "Traffic"  should have gone to Joaquin Phoenix for "The Gladiator".

2001- Another big upset was Denzel Washington won Best Actor for "Training Day." For what? Playing a corrupt cop? Should have easily gone to Russell Crowe for "A Beautiful Mind," for playing a schizophrenic.  Then Crowe would have been one of the few people with back-to-back Oscar wins.

2002- This one I still have NOT recovered from "Chicago," stole the Oscar for Best Picture when it should have clearly been "The Pianist."

2006- Best Supporting Actress was Rachel Weisz for "The Constant Gardener," but Amy Adams was more amazing in "Junebug."

2006- Best Picture was "The Departed," good movie but not as original as "Little Miss Sunshine," which should have won. Come on, a comedy hasn't won since "Annie Hall."

2010- Best Actress was Natalie Portman for "Black Swan".  I didn't love her acting in that movie if anything her co-star Mila Kunis should have been nominated.  Jennifer Lawrence should have won for "Winter's Bone".

2010- Best Supporting Actress went to Christian Bale who was very good in "The Fighter" but I liked Geoffrey Rush in "The King's Speech" more.

2010- Melissa Leo is extremely talented but I would have given her Best Supporting Actress award for "The Fighter" to Hailee Steinfeld for her role in "True Grit". For a young girl of 14 acting in a period piece her acting was amazingly natural.

2011- "The Artist" was an excellent and different movie for this age but I adored "The Help".

2012- Best Supporting actress should have went to Amy Adams for "The Master" rather than Anne Hathaway for "Les Miserables".

2012- Best Picture should have been "Django Unchained" instead of "Argo". Sorry, Ben.

2013- Best Picture should have been "Captain Phillips" not "12 Years a Slave"

2014- Best Picture should have been "The Grand Budapest Hotel" not "Birdman"

2017- Best Picture should have been "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" instead of "The Shape of Water". Although I love director Del Toro.

2018 - Best Picture should have been "Roma" not "Green Book".  Although Green Book was a good movie.

2019- "Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood" should have won Best Picture not "Parasite."
"Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood" should have won Original Screenplay not "Parasite."
Scarlett Johansson should have won Best Supporting Actress for "Jo Jo Rabbit" not Laura Dern for "Marriage Story". Although I love Dern.

2021- Will Smith shouldn't have won anything because he assaulted someone on stage.

2008 Oscars

So who out there sat through the 4 hour show? I did and I thought of a way to make it shorter. First get rid of the art awards. I just don't care. Documentary shorts, animated shorts, (those are the only thing short about the oscars.) And get rid of the best songs. They should play 20 seconds of each song and then announce the winner. I don't need to see people dancing across the stage and singing to some bland Disney song. I actually would perfer hearing the scores more. Let's hear some brass bands or Yo Yo Ma playing the cello. I would have loved to hear the score from "There Will be Blood" or "Requim for a Dream." That is so much more tolerable. So yeah, cut out the songs and keep the basics: acting, writing, directing, etc.
Now about the winners. Mostly pleasing. I agreed very much with Daniel Day Lewis winning. He was amazing and so was the movie. I highly recommend seeing it before you die. I would have liked to see Ryan Gosling nominated for best actor for his work in "Lars and the Real Girl." I was very happy that Marion Cotillard won for best actress. She had a hard role to play as Edith Piaf. She shaved off her eyebrows and hairline for the role. She deserved it the most. I was worried, everyone was saying Julie Christie but I disagreed. Although Christie was very good in "Away from Her", She had a very limited role. She had very few lines and most of it was facial expressions. So the academy got that one right. Javier Bardem winning was quite obvious. He scared everyone that was in the theater. He was ruthless. Loved him. Now best supporting actress went to Tilda Swinton. This I didn't really have a favorite so I didn't really mind anyone winning. However, perhaps it would have been better if someone who was wearing something other than a Hefty bag should have one. Her outfit will go down in history like Bjork's swan thing. She is a beautiful, unique looking woman who looks amazing without a stitch of make-up and she is skinny minny. She obiviously doesn't feel comfortable in dresses cause she usually wears pant suits, so what happened? She was dressed like a judge and it was all loose and baggy on her tiny body. It was worse than Paltrow's pink dress mishap. I would have preferred Swinton to have worn Britney Spear's dirty shredded fishnet stockings. Best original screenplay was a good choice. Diablo Cody's screenplay for "Juno", was great. Her outfit was a little scary. The leopard print with the high slit and the crossbone earrings. Mishmosh. But congrats. And Coen brothers won adapted screenplay, directors, and picture. They deserve screenplay & directors. But I don't think "No Country for Old Men," was the best film of the year I think "There Will be Blood," was. Hands down. I enjoyed "No Country..." it was good, it was a fun ride, but "There Will..." was just more moving and touching and all that jazz.
And in a long conclusion this is what I did not like about this years oscars. I enjoyed John Stewart. I was never ga-ga about any host so I don't really care. I enjoyed Ellen. Please never invite Billy Crystal or Whoopi back. Okay so first I HATED that Michael Clayton was nominated for best picture. It was lame and I enjoyed it the 1st time when it was called "Erin Brockovitch." Was George Clooney great, sure. It stops there. What movie should have taken that place you ask? "Before the Devil Knows You're Dead," starring Philip Seymore Hoffman, Ethan Hawke, Marisa Tomei and Albert Finney. That was one of the best films of this year. If you have not seen it, it has to be added to your must list. It should have been nominated and it was shafted. Shame, shame. Well, I'll be the first to say the Oscars don't always get it right...(tune in for more of that at a later date.) And the thing that pissed me off entirely was the memorial footage. You know when we honor those who we have lost over the year? Anyway, since when do we honor agents? This is the 1st year that they added agents and why? Why are we honoring them? What the hell do they have anything to do with the production of films? Why don't we start honoring the actors lawyers? And they should have had a longer honor for Heath, yes the other actors died this year but most were over 60, this guy was under 30. And did we forget someone?? What the hell happened to honoring Brad Renfro? Did he not die a week before Heath. Did he not make over 10 films? Was he not a very talented young man? What a slap in the face to his family and fans that may have tuned in to see the honor. They should be ashamed and make a public apology. This is just another time that the Academy Awards has disappointed me terribly but never the less I shall tune in again next year.
