2023 Oscar Rant

 95th Oscars
Sunday, March 12, 2023, 8:00 pm
Host: Jimmy Kimmel (3rd time)

8:00 pm: Opening monologue wasn't terrible.  Thank goodness not too political.  Bless composer John Williams he's 91 years old.  He's the oldest nominee ever for his score for "The Fabelmans"  Only Disney has been nominated more times than him.  Kimmel quickly addresses the "Slap" from last year and says how no one did anything in the audience.  I said the same thing last year but apparently that was taboo at that time.  Tems' white tulle structured Lever Couture dress is a piece of art.  However, the fabric is styled high above her head and I feel bad for anyone seated behind her during the show.

8:16 pm: Emily Blunt is in a simple white off the shoulder, long sleeved Valentino dress.  It is underwhelming and I wish she did more with her hair.  It's just slicked back.  The Rock presents in a way too tight pale pink satin Dolce and Gabbana jacket.  Best Animated Film goes to "Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio".   Not loving Eva Longoria's white Zuhair Murad Couture dress.  It's very intricate geometric pattern and low cut front makes it look more like a beach cover up you would wear on the beach while on  vacation Mexico.

8:27 pm: Ariana DeBose is in a white amazing, geometric beaded Atelier Versace dress.  It's like a better version of Eva Longoria's dress.  One of my Best Dressed.  She's presenting with last year's Best Supporting Actor winner Troy Kotsur . Best Supporting Actor goes to Ke Huy Quan for "Everything Everywhere All At Once".  I am a child of the 80s and never forgot him from "Indiana and the Temple of Doom" and "Goonies".  He was an 80s staple.  So happy he won.  Such a kind person.  Not a dry eye in the house.

8:34 pm:  Jamie Lee Curtis is in a beautiful white beaded Dolce and Gabbana dress.  She wins for "Everything Everywhere All At Once".  Angela Bassett looks amazing in a beautiful rich, purple Moschino dress.  One of my Best dressed. Outside of her dress though, she looks pissed as all hell that she lost.  Not even clapping.  Look this is the game you play, anyone can win.  Jamie has been at this for over 40 years in great movies like "A Fish Called Wanda" and "Trading Places".  Congrats!

8:40 pm: Cara Delevingne looks just stunning in a beautiful red off one shoulder Elie Saab dress. Love her jewelry, shoes, hair, make-up.  Perfection.  One of my best dressed of the night.  Cate Blanchett looks amazing in a blue draped top with a black skirt by Louis Vuitton.  Love her make-up.   Love Sandra Oh's deep yellow Giambattista Valli dress.  Draped to perfection.

8:50 pm: Quest Love presents Best Documentary  to "Navalny".  I have see to "Fire of Love".  I remember those two scientists dying in 1991 from the volcano explosion.   "An Irish Goodbye" wins best live action short.  One of the crew member that won has Down's Syndrome and is wearing an amazing leopard jacket.  It is his birthday and the crowd sings "Happy Birthday to James" to him.. Very Special.

8:56 pm: Halle Baily looks amazing in an elegant corseted top light blue tulle Dolce and Gabbana dress.  One of my best dressed of the night.  Her co-presenter Melissa McCarthy's giant, puffy, red, high collared Christian Siriano dress is a whole different story.  So ugly, so unflattering.  One of my Worst Dressed of the night.  Absolutely loving Marlee Maitlin's black Dolce and Gabbana jacket with the black feather skirt.  hair, make-up, jewelry. Perfection.  One of my Best Dressed of the night.

9:03 pm: Michael B. Jordan is very handsome.  Best cinematography goes to "All Quiet on the Western Front".  Well deserved.  Rooney Mara always looks pale and somber like a sacrificial lamb.  She's wearing a nude colored Alexander McQueen dress that is draped off the shoulder and looks like it is tied with a rubber band at her heels, while the rest of the gown drags on the ground.  How odd.  I usually love McQueen but this is a major fail for me.  Hate her hair, split down the middle slicked back in bun.  UGH.

9:09 pm: The song from "Everything Everywhere All at Once" (Im going to type EEAAO from now on, it's ridiculous) is performed.  I'm not loving it.  Kinda has no consistent melody...which fits well to this insanely chaotic movie.

9:19: Man, producing company A-24 is making so many good movies lately.  Good for them.  Jennifer Connelly is wearing a simple off the shoulder black Louis Vuitton dress.  It has this random silver beaded triangle on her upper chest.  I don't love this dress and her hair is boring.  She has such beautiful long black hair and she has it completely slicked back in a bun.  A lot of ladies did that tonight.  It's boring and such a waste of money to pay for this hair style.  She presents with Samuel L. Jackson.  Love his silver tux jacket.  "The Whale" wins Best Hair and Make-up.  Deservingly so.

9:20 pm: Next presenters are Morgan Freeman and Margot Robbie in a simple off the shoulder, sequined, black Armani Prive dress.  At least her hair is down and not slicked back.  We are celebrating 100 Years of Warner Brothers.  Michelle Williams is wearing this beautifully beaded white and silver Chanel Couture dress.  It has a sheer tulle cape that flows nicely over her arms covered in sparkles.  Delicate and lovely.

9:25 pm: Kimmel brings out Jenny the Donkey from "The Banshees of Inisherin".  What a sweet creature. I sobbed during the movie.  Jessie Buckley looks like she borrowed her Rodarte dress from Helena Bonham Carter.  It dark and goth-like, I love it but you lose me with the bright orange Ronald McDonald hair.  Yikes.

9:27 pm: Julia Louis Dreyfus and Paul Dano present Best Costume.  Dreyfus makes a funny joke about how her dress is from (one of her first films) "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation".  However this dress is no laughing matter.  It is so boring and the black and white diamond print is so frumpy.  More like cushion upholstery.  and the sun burst belt, like what is going on here?  One of my Worst Dressed of the night.
Best costume goes to for "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.  Oh my, for a costume designer I hate this yellow Valentino dress.  So stiff looking, like a traffic cone, no flow to it.  I wish she made her own gown.  Amazing Talent! Her speech cards are yellow to match her dress, damn she don't miss a thing.  Her mother just died and she decided award to her.... her mother was 101??? Damn, Ruth may live that long her skin is impeccable.

9:30 pm: Deepika Padukone presents from "RRR" the song"Naatu Naatu".  Holy Macaroni!  The energy and passion and costumes and colors! absolutely beautiful.. I had to rewatch it multiple times!!  Ana de Armas' Louis Vuitton dress is very strange.  Gray simple top and then at the knees all of these oyster shell-like fabric appliqués.  Her hair is just down and looks a mess.  Fail.

9:40 pm: Salma Hayek's dress is an epic fail.  I usually love her dresses but this is one for the history books.  It's a burnt orange shimmering full sequin and fringe Gucci dress.  Yikes! one of my Worst Dressed of the night.  Her co-presenter is Antonio Banderios.  International feature film goes to Germany for "All Quiet on the Western Front".  Very good movie. (and book)

9:50 pm: Elizabeth Olsen's black Givenchy dress is very revealing in the bright lights.  Her co-presenter is Padro Pascal.  He is quite handsome and all the rave right now.  Best Documentary Short goes to "The Elephant Whisperers".  Best Animated Short goes to "The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse".

9:57 pm: Lady Gaga performs her song from "Top Gun: Maverick".  So odd, she completely took off her dress and make-up for this performance to make it melodramatic. The song is Meh.  I did not love her red carpet look.  A black sheer on top Versace dress.  The beaded neckline dated the dress and the waistline started at the hips, this design I do not understand.  I hated her hair and loud red lipstick.  Not flattering.

10:06 pm: Andie McDowell looks terrible in her boring, black Saint Laurent dress.  just miserable.  Everything is wrong, her hair, make-up, lack of jewelry.  One of my Worst Dressed of the night.  Her co-presenter is Hugh Grant.  Best Production goes to "All Quiet on the Western Front".

10:10 pm: I did not like Mindy Kaling's white Very Wang dress on the red carpet.  It is just a white bra on top and straps up her waist and this random floating sleeves from her wrists to her elbow.  Quite odd.  But what's even more odd is she changed her dress at the show and presented in the same exact dress but in black.  I did like it more in black but like why?? why all the hassle?? just to present Best Score to "All Quiet on the Western Front".  Weird

10:21 pm: Elizabeth Banks sounds like she has laryngitis.  I do not like her two tuned Vivienne Westwood dress.  The top layer is just a skein of black fabric with a roll of white fabric trailing behind her.  It looks very unfinished.  One of my Worst Dressed.  Cocaine bear is next to her.  A new movie coming out.  Not very funny. The bear died in real life. Visual effects goes to "Avatar: The Way of Water".

10:30 pm: Danai Gurira has on a very simple black Jason Wu dress but its the hair-do that is puzzling.  I'm feeling a little Bride of Frankenstein or Marge Simpson vibe.  It literally is standing straight up.  Love Rihanna's black leather and sheer Alaia dress.  She performs song from Black Panther "Lift Me Up".  Beautiful song, I think this is the only competition to "Naatu, Naatu" tonight.  Her voice is stunning.

10:38 pm: Florence Pugh is wearing a very bulky tan Valentino Couture dress that looks like a bed comforter and black shorts.  I do, however, like her chunky shoes. Her co-presenter is Andrew Garfield.  Best Original Screenplay goes to "EEAAO".  Best Adapted screenplay goes to "Women Talking".  Sarah Polley.  I get the whole woman wearing tux theme.  I love a slick tailored tux on a woman or a funky one like Diane Keaton style.  However, I am not loving Sarah Polley's suit tonight.  It a basic Saint Laurent black tux but with a frilly white shirt like from the 70s and patent leather shoes with no sox.  Not loving it.  Lack luster.

10:51 pm: Kate Hudson looks absolutely perfect.  The free flowing hair, the simple make-up.  I love this large sequined silver Louis Vuitton off the shoulder dress with flowing short sleeves.  It has double spaghetti straps that crosses at the chest.  One of my Best Dressed for the night.  I usually like what Janelle Monae wears but this dress was just underwhelming and not elegant enough for the Oscars.  I was just a small black halter top and orange skirt from Vera Wang.  I expected much more. Best Sound goes to "Top Gun: Maverick".

10:54 pm: Best Song goes to "Naatu, Naatu" from the movie "RRR".  Cute thank you speech.  Everyone is very excited this is the first time a song from a Bollywood movie has been nominated and it WON.  very exciting.  Catchy tune.   Kerry Condon looks wonderful in this simple pale yellow Atelier Versace dress.  Her hair is down and flowing, love the pop of red lipstick.. Perfect.

10:57 pm: John Travolta gets coughed up as he introduces the Memorial clips.  This poor man, in the last couple of years he lost his son, his wife and his two best friends this year.. Olivia Newton-John and Kirstie Alley.  Again, they left out so many beautiful and talented actors.  I say this every year they add people that were agents, sound techs, publishers, press handlers, it's utter nonsense, no offense to their families but half the people in the audience doesn't know who these people are which means that zero people at home recognize any of these people.  Some of the actors left out of the Memoriam this year was Anne Heche, Tom Sizemore, Leslie Jordan, Paul Sorvino, Gilbert Gottfried, Melinda Dillon,  Cindy Williams, Charlbi Dean and Philip Baker Hall.

11:05 pm: Zoe Saldana looks like she is wearing her nightgown in this simple off white Fendi Couture dress.  One of my Worst Dressed and Sigoryney Weaver looks terrible in this shapeless gold, long sleeved dress by Givenchy.  A belt on a dress was never so needed.  One of my Worst Dressed.  They present the award for film editing to "EEAAO"

11:10 pm: Nicole Kidman is wearing a black sequined Armani Prive dress with very large floral accents on her shoulder and hip.  Best directing goes to Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert for "EEAAO".  If you ask me it felt like this movie had about 1,000 more directors working on it.  It went in every director but good.  Ava Duvernay looks amazing in this silver and black off the should Louis Vuitton dress.  It has this incredible beaded train.  Hair and make-up perfect.

11:19 pm: Jessica Castain is wearing a simple silver sequined Gucci dress with a deep V-neck trimmed in black fabric.  Love that she has her red hair down and flowing.  Not loving Halle Berry's Tamar Ralph's white high slit on the hip dress with rose appliqués on her hip and neck. They present best actor to Brendan Fraser for "The Whale".  His speech is emotional but very odd.  He makes many fish and ocean references.  Best actress goes to Michelle Yeoh for "EEAAO".  She is wearing a nice white feathered dress by Christian Dior Couture.

11:31 pm: Harrison Ford presents Best Picture to "EEAAO".  The crowd goes wild.  Ke Huy Quan runs on stage right into Harrison Ford's arms.  Quan was a child when he played beside Harrison Ford in "Indiana and the Temple of Doom".  It is a tender moment and joyful reunion.

BEST DRESSED: Kate Hudson in Louis Vuitton
WORST DRESSED: Melissa McCarthy in Christian Siriano

2023 Golden Globe Rant

Tuesday January 10, 2023
8:00 pm
Host: Jarrod Carmichael

On a Tuesday this year due to the NFL schedule.

I first watched E! on the red carpet.  Laverne Cox was wearing a blue John Galliano dress with sequin designs.  She looked great, but I think I would have loved the dress more without the sequins.  Loni Love is wearing a terrible lilac Galliano dress.  It is just so wrong in so many ways.  The color, the tulle train, the neck line, the hair.  It looks cheap.  All wrong.  One of my worst dressed of the night.

8:00 pm: The host is a comedian named Jarrod Carmichael.  I have no idea who he is but he better be funny.

8:10 pm: Ok, that opening monologue was one of the angriest and most boring things I've ever heard.  He literally sat on the stage.  Where is Amy Poehler and Tina Fey?? Where is Ricky Gervais?  Now they are all funny.  This guy is terrible.  Along with giving Eddie Murphy the Cecil B. DeMille award tonight they might as well have let him host!

8:12 pm: Jennifer Hudson is wearing a beautiful gold C.D. Greene dress.  The pattern is very interesting, like little blocks of gold.  Actor Ke Huy Quan (or as we remember him as "Short Round" from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.  Goonies.) wins Best Supporting Actor for "Everything Everywhere All At Once."  I'm glad he finally won after being in the business for decades.  Speech is very touching.

8:15 pm: Angela Bassett looks stunning in a silver, sleeveless, turtle neck dress by Pamella Roland. One of my best dressed for the night. She won Best Supporting Actress for her role in "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

8:20 pm: I'm not in love with Lily James' red Atelier Versace dress.  I wish it was one big skirt rather than her legs in a sleeping bag, wrapped in a comforter.

8:25 pm: Loving Eddie Redmayne's subtle rose accented suit.

8:28 pm: Jennifer Coolidge looks great in a Black, long sleeved, off the shoulder dress by Dolce and Gabbana.  One of my best dressed for the night.  She's a presenter tonight, she's trying to act all ditzy.  She's cute but the speech rambles on too long.  Tyler James Williams wins for Best Supporting Actor in a comedy TV series.  I hate this blue wide legged Amiri suit he has one.  He looks like a broke pimp.   One of my worst dressed of the night.

8:30 pm: Jessica Chastain's Oscar de la Renta dress looks like a giant spider web.  Better suited for Halloween.

8:35 pm: Jenna Ortega looks amazing in a beige Gucci dress that crisscrosses fabric at the waist.  One of my best dressed of the night.  Best Original Score goes to "Babylon".  Best Original Song goes to "Naatu Naatu".

8:40 pm: I don't love Margot Robbie's pink, fringed Chanel dress.  It's a cross between flapper and figure skater.

8:45 pm: Viola Davis looks smoking hot in a nicely draped blue Jason Wu dress.

8:47 pm: Niecy Nash-Betts looks amazing in a beautiful rich purple colored Dolce and Gabbana dress.  It's accented with beautiful purple gems.  I usually despise gloves, but love these.  Jeremy Allen White wins Best Actor in a comedy series for "The Bear".

8:50 pm: Quinta Brunson wins Best Actress in a Comedy series for "Abbott Elementary".  I really don't like her black and pink ruffled Christian Siriano dress.

8:55 pm: not feeling Ana de Armas' black and white lace Louis Vuitton dress.  It looks like she glued a table runner on the front of her dress.  Colin Farrell wins Best Actor in a Comedy film for "The Banshees of Inisherin".  Man, his guy does not age.  He is as handsome as ever.

9:00 pm: Kaley Cuoco is pregnant and looks stunning in a pale purple Vera Wang gown.

9:05 pm: I do not love Michelle Yeoh navy two tiered plastic looking Armani Price dress.  She wins Best Actress for her role in the a comedy film "Everything Everywhere All at Once."

9:15pm: Clare Danes looks like a hot mess in a Giambattista gown.  The pink bow at the chest, the old lady blanket print, the sequins and fringe.  Too much.  One of the worst dressed of the night.   Guillermo del Toro wins Best Animated Film for "Pinocchio".

9:17 pm: I hate this orange and white Prada dress Letitia Wright is wearing.  It looks like a roll of paper towels used to wipe up spilled orange juice.  One of my worst dressed of the night.  Austin Butler wins Best Actor in a Drama film for "Elvis".  He is quite handsome.

9:25 pm: the Host makes a dumb joke about Tom Cruise and it falls flat.  Was this his first attempt at humor tonight???

9:26 pm: Zendaya wins Best Actress in a Drama Series for "Euphoria".  She is absent.

9:28 pm: Julia Garner wins Best Supporting Actress in a TV series Drama for "Ozark".  I don't love this pink Gucci ruffled dress.  I'm having flashbacks of Paltrow at the 1999 Oscars.

9:30 pm: Sigourney Weaver looks nice in a simple Saint Laurent black dress.

9:35 pm: Billy Porter looks elegant is this velvet hot pink suit by Christian Siriano.  The train is huge.  He presents Ryan Murphy with the Carol Burnett Award for his career in television.  Man, this guy has done a lot.  I have loved so many of his works especially American Horror Story, Dahmer, and Feud.  Congrats to him.

9:45 pm: I don't like Anya Taylor-Joy's very yellow Christian Dior dress.  I hate the color but most I wish that it wasn't looking like a two piece bikini with a sarong.

9:53 pm: Henry Golding looks dapper as always.  Best Actress in a Drama film goes to Cate Blanchett for "Tar".  Unfortunately that talented beauty was also absent.

9:55 pm: Best Foreign Film goes to "Argentina, 1985".

10:00 pm: Sean Penn comes out and introduces the president of Ukraine.??? why?  Again, this has NOTHING to do with the art of film.  Stop mixing politics into every single thing.  People watch movies as a hobby, as a way to escape reality, we don't need to see politicians during an award show.  Is the President of Ukraine also going to appear at the  Super Bowl?? or at my niece's dance recital??  This is nonsense.  This show is aired all over the world and when they bring politics into the film award shows it divides the audience.  This is why viewership is way down.  The host is NOT funny and they always manipulate politics into it some way.  These award shows never learn from their previous mistakes.

10:06 pm: Hilary Swank is pregnant and is wearing a very underwhelming green Prada dress.  Best Screenplay for a Motion Picture goes to Martin McDonagh for "The Banshees of Inisherin".

10:09 pm: Wowza, Colman Domingo looking mighty fine in a sharp, satin and sequined Dolce and Gabbana tapered suit.  Steven Spielberg win best director for "The Fabelmans".  Very nice speech.

10:12 pm: Yikes! Jenny Slate's green silk Rodarte dress with flower a chest is horrible.  She not wearing a bra which is very obvious.  Her hair is a hot mess too.  One of my worst dressed of the night.

10:18 pm: Nicole Byer's hair and black sequin Christian Siriano dress are a bit too much.  Ana Gasteyer blue ombre dress is very loud, better on the beach with a margarita in hand.  However, they are much funnier than the Host.  Best Supporting Actor in a Mini-series goes to Paul Walter Hauser for "Black Bird".  I love him, he is unsung!

10:20 pm: There are way too many ruffles on Michelle Williams' eggshell colored Gucci dress.

10:23 pm: Best Supporting Actress in a mini-series goes to Jennifer Coolidge for "The White Lotus".  She's so excited.  Again love the black sequin dress.

10:30 pm: I don't love Selena Gomez's black Valentino dress with the giant puffy purple sleeves.

10:33 pm: Best Actress in a Mini-series goes to Amanda Seyfried for "The Dropout".  She is absent.
Man, a lot of people did not attend and I don't think it is just due to the bad flooding in L.A.

10:35 pm: Best Actor in a Mini-series goes to Evan Peters for "Dahmer".  Very well deserved.  So creepy.

10:37 pm: Michaela Jae Rodriguez's Balmain dress looks like a giant blue bow you'd put on a new car.  Best Mini-Series goes to "The White Lotus".  Director Mike White is happily hdrunk.

10:40 pm: Adam Scott is a funny guy but this Irish looking green suit with a bowler tie by Paul Smith is no laughing matter.  Yikes!

10:43 pm: Tracy Morgan and Jamie Lee Curtis present Eddie Murphy with the Cecil B. DeMille award for his contribution to the art of film.  Jamie looks great in a simple Safiyaa black dress with a lace cape.  Tracy was a little funny.  Oh, Eddie....I'm over the "Will Smith" jokes.  My favorite Eddie Murphy movies are Beverly Hills Cop, Beverly Hills Cop II, Life, The Nutty Professor, Trading Spaces, and Coming to America.

10:50 pm: Heidi Klum's silver sequined and pink feathered mini dress by Kevin Germanier is not appropriate whatsoever for this award show.  Or a P.T.A. meeting.

10:58 pm: Regina Hall looks hot in a black leather dress by Monique Lhullier.  Best Actor in a Drama TV series goes to Kevin Costner for "Yellowstone".  He also is absent.  Poor baby, he was suck in his mansion in Santa Barbara due to the rain and flooding.

Going into Over time....

11:00 pm: Best Comedy TV series goes to "Abbott Elementary"

11:02 pm: Not loving Natasha Lyonne's Givenchy black dress.  I like the red hair but not the style.  It should have all been let down.  "House of the Dragon" wins Best Drama TV series.  I have yet to watch it.

11:08 pm: the president of the Hollywood Foreign Press comes out to make a speech about change and rectifying their previous errors.  I love how she comes out so late, after everyone in the audience is good and liquored up.

11:12 pm: Selma Hayek's nude, sequined Gucci dress would have been beautiful but for the out of place black spaghetti straps.   Best Comedy Film goes to "The Banshees of Inisherin".  Very good film, but I cried a lot..so I don't know how much of a comedy it was.

11:14 pm: Kerry Condon looks stunning in a simple black off the shoulder Brandon Maxwell dress.

11:16 pm: Quentin Tarantino presents the Best Drama Film to Steven Spielberg for "The Fabelmans".

11:20 pm: End of Show...... a lot of good films and series.  Wish the Host was funnier.

BEST DRESSED: Jenna Ortega
WORST DRESSED: Claire Danes.
