Celebrities Who Died Before the Film was Complete

Here's a list of actors who died before filming had wrapped:


Philip Seymour Hoffman died from a heroin overdose while still filming "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2". No talk yet on what they will do about his final scenes. He was 46.

Oliver Reed drank himself to death while filming "Gladiator". The film spent millions to digitally recreate his image for his final scenes. He was also signed on to star in "My Uncle Silas"at the time of his death.  Albert Finney took his place. Reed was 61.

Brandon Lee was accidentally shot on the set of "The Crow". The film had to both digitally recreate Lee's face and also use a body double to complete the film after his death. He was 28.

John Candy died of a heart attack while filming "Wagons East". The few scenes left to film with Candy were either cut or used earlier footage of him. The film was a flop. He was 43.

Heath Ledger died from a drug overdose while still filming "The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus".  The film was postponed for a few months after his death so the writers could do a rewrite.  The film was finally completed using Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell as replacements for Ledger.  Do to the dream-like nature of this film the concept worked.  Ledger would win an oscar posthumously for "The Dark Knight." He was 28.

River Phoenix died from a drug overdose on Halloween night while filming "Dark Blood". The film was later abandoned due to his death.  Phoenix was also was signed on to be the interviewer in "Interview With the Vampire." Christian Slater took his part and donated all of the money.  Phoenix was 23.

Aaliyah died in a plane crash while still working on "Queen of the Damned".  She also was signed on to star in "The Matrix: Reloaded".  She was 22.

Jean Harlow died from kidney failure with just one week's worth left of shooting of her final film "Saratoga", her stand-in replaced her in her final scenes. Her final film was the highest grossing film of 1937.

Donald Pleasance died while filming his final movie "Halloween 6".  Most of his scenes were cut and his role was made into a much smaller part. The movie is dedicated to him. He was  75.

Heather O'Rourke died while still filming her last film "Poltergeist 3".  She had been suffering from a blocked intestine but was misdiagnosed with Crohn's disease.  She was given cortisone which made her swell which was obvious in her drastic appearance from the "Poltergeist" sequel to her final film "Poltergeist 3".  Before doctors could properly diagnose her she died from septic shock.  Her family would later win a law suit against the hospital.  Her final scenes in the movie were filmed with a stand-in.  Her co-star Tom Skerritt was a pallbearer.  She was 12 years old.

Robert Shaw was in the middle of filming "Avalanche Express" when he died of a heart attack at age 51. Shaw's health was failing and his voice was so low at the time that the film company hired two men to dub over Shaw's lines. In the long run the movie ended up being a flop.

Natalie Wood died before finishing her work on her final film "Brainstorm".  The producers wanted to cancel the film following her death and claim the insurance money but the director persuade the film and shot the ending with a stand-in.  The film was dedicated to her.  She was 43.

Tyrone Power died from a heart attack while shooting a fencing scene for the film "Solomon and Sheba".  They reshot the movie with Yul Brynner.  Power was 44 years old.

Bela Lugosi died while filming the failed movie "Plan 9 from Outer Space."  He was replaced by the director's chiropractor. Lugosi was 73.

Vic Morrow was killed on set of the movie "Twilight Zone: The Movie".  He was shooting a scene with a helicopter when it lost control and decapitated him.  Morrow was 53.  Director John Landis was accused of manslaughter.  He was later found not guilty.

Roy Kinnear died after falling off a horse while filming a scene for his final film "Return of the Three Musketeers".  The film was finished using a body double. Richard Chamberline quit the film due to the producers' lack of reaction over Kinnear death.  Kinnear was 54.

Frank Morgan died of a heart attack just days into filming his final movie "Annie Get Your Gun." He was replaced by another actor. Morgan was 59.

Marilyn Monroe was in the middle of filming her final movie "Something's Gotta Give" when she was found dead from a drug overdose.  She was 36.  The movie was eventually scrapped.

William Hickey died during the filming of "Better Than Ever."  His role was replaced by the producer in final scenes.  Three final movies were released after his death including "Mousehunt" which is dedicated to him.  He was 69.

Paul Walker died in a car crash before he finished filming "Fast and the Furious 7". He was 40.

John Cazale was already dying from bone cancer when he began filming "The Deer Hunter".  He was able to wrap all his screens but died before the film was complete.  He was 42.

David Dukes died from a heart attack while in the middle of filming "Red Rose".  He was 55 years old.


Died before their last film was released:


James Dean died in a car accident before "Rebel Without a Cause" and "Giant" were released.  He would be posthumously nominated for both "East of Eden" and "Giant". He was 24.

Massimo Troisi died 12 days after finishing "Il Postino". He would be posthumously nominated for his role. He was 41.

Spencer Tracy died 17 days after filming wrapped on "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?". He would be posthumously nominated for his role in it. He was 67.

Andre the Giant died shortly after he finished his last film "Trading Mom." He had a heart attack while attending his father's funeral. He was 46.

Rick Aviles died from AIDS (due to a heroin addiction) four months before the release of his last movie "Waterworld". He was 42.

Richard Burton died four months before the release of his last film "1984". He was 58.

Lou Costello died five months before the release of his last film "The 30 Foot Bride of Candy Rock." He was 52.

Michael Clarke Duncan died from a heart attack before the release of his final four films "In the Hive," "Resurrection," "From the Rough" and "The Challenger".  He was 54.

Errol Flynn died two months before the release of his last film "Cuban Rebel Girls". The film bombed. He was 50.

Clark Gable died three months before the release of his final film "The Misfits".  He was 59.

James Gandolfini died three months before the release of his last films "Enough Said" and "Animal Rescue." "Enough Said" is dedicated to him.  He was vacationing in Rome with his teenage son at the time of his death. He was 51.

Raul Julia died from a stroke two months before his final film "Street Fighter" was released.  The film is dedicated to him.  He was set to play Bucho in "Desperado" but was replaced by Joaquim de Almeida after his death.  Julia won a Golden Globe posthumously for his work in "The Burning Season". He was 54.

Carole Lombard died in a plane crash two months before the release of her final film "To Be or Not To Be".  Before the film was released they cut her line in which her character said "What can happen in a plane?" She was 33.

Bernie Mac died from pneumonia before the release of his last three films "Old Dogs," "Madagascar 2" and "Soul Man." Both Madagascar and Soul Man are dedicated to him. He was 50.

Pat Morita died before the release of his final four films.  He was 73.

John Ritter died from a heart attack two months before the release of his final movie "Bad Santa." The film is dedicated to him. He was 54.

Patrick Swayze died from pancreatic cancer one month before the release of his final film "Powder Blue".  He was 57.

Rudolph Valentino died from blood poisoning two weeks before the release of his final film "Son of the Sheik".  He was 31.

Sharon Tate was murdered by the Manson followers before the release of her final film "12 plus one".  She was pregnant with her husband, Roman Polanski's son at the time she was stabbed to death. Polanski's movie "Tess" is dedicated to Sharon.  She was 26.

David Carradine died before the release of his last eight feature films. He was 72.

Chris Farley died from a drug overdose five months before the release of his two last final films "Almost Heroes" and "Dirty Work".  He was originally cast to do the voice of "Shrek". He was 33.

Whitney Houston died from a cocaine overdose six months before the release of her film "Sparkle". She was 48.

Brad Renfro died from a heroin overdose six months before the release of his final film "The Informer". He was 25.

Phil Hartman was shot by his wife less than two months before the release of his final movie "Small Soldiers." He was 49.

Bruce Lee died three weeks before the release of his final film "Enter the Dragon."  Lee died from an allergic reaction to a painkiller.  Lee was 32 years old.

Gary Cooper died from a heart attack the same month his last movie "The Naked Edge" was released. Cooper was 60.

Chris Penn died before the release of his final two films "Holly" and "King of Sorrow". He was 40.

Buster Keaton died eight months before the release of his last film "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum".  He was 70.

Boris Karloff died before the release of his four final films.  He was 81.

J.T. Walsh died months before the release of his last two films "The Negotiator" and "Pleasantville". Both films are dedicated to him.  He died of a heart attack at 54.

Lloyd Bridges died before the release of his last two films "Mafia!" and "Meeting Daddy".  Both films are dedicated to him. Also a "Seinfeld" episode he starred in before his death was dedicated to him.  He was 85.

Ruth Gordon died before the release of her last two films "Maxie" and "The Trouble with Spies".  She was 88.

Jessica Tandy died from ovarian cancer before the release of her last two movies "Camilla" and "Nobody's Fool".  She was 85.

Rodney Dangerfield died before the release of his last film "Angels with Angles". He was 82.

Orson Welles died before the release of his final film "Someone to Love". He was 70.

Edward G. Robinson died two weeks after filming wrapped on the movie "Soylent Green". He was 79.

Adrienne Shelly was murdered in her apartment by a burglar before the release of her final acting and directed film "Waitress".  Her murderer was found and charged with the crime.  She was 40.

Robin Williams committed suicide before the release of his three last films "Merry Friggin' Christmas", "Night at the Museum 3", "Absolutely Anything".  He was also signed on to make a sequel to his beloved film "Mrs. Doubtfire". He was 63.

Kenneth McMillan died from liver disease three weeks before his final film "Three Fugitives" was released. He was 56.

John Houseman died from spinal cancer shortly before the release of his final films "Scrooged" and "The Naked Gun". He was 86.

Bill Paxton: died from a stroke after heart surgery on 2/25/17. He died before the release of his final film "The Circle". He was 61.

Alexa Kenin was mysteriously found dead in her NYC apartment a few months before the film "Pretty in Pink" was released.  She was 23. The film is dedicated to her.

Luke Perry died from a stroke on March 4, 2019.  His last film "Once Upon a Time...In Hollywood" was released July 26, 2019.

Peter Fonda died from lung cancer on August 16, 2019.  His last film "The Last Full Measure" was released on October 25, 2019.
