2018 Oscar Rant

Sunday March 4, 2018
90th Ceremony
8:00 pm
Host: Jimmy Kimmel

8 pm: Opening Monologue is funny. Of course Harvey Weinstein is mentioned and how he was kicked out of the academy.  Jimmy offers a jet ski to whoever has the shortest acceptance speech.

Meryl Streep nominated tonight for "The Post" making it her 21st time.  Looking stunning in a simple red Dior dress.

WOW! Whoopi Goldberg's Christian Siriano green and purple floral dress is god awful.. It is so loud on the red carpet.  It's too much print and too much fabric.  One of worst dressed ever.

8:15 pm: Viola Davis is wearing a very loud Michael Kors hot pink dress. The top half of her hair is pulled back so tight she looks bald. hate it.  Sam Rockwell wins for Best Supporting Actor in "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri". Well deserved. very funny speech.  He thanks anyone that has ever "looked" at a billboard. ha. Dedicates award to Philip Seymour Hoffman.  ( by the way, he is wearing cufflinks with his long time love, Leslie Bibb's name on them.)

Emily Blunt's pale blue lace Schiaparelli dress is too ancient looking.  Something for the series "Little House on the Prairie". Looks like it should be in a museum.

8:26 pm: Gal Gabot's gold Givenchy dress is super sparkly and gorgeous.

Laurie Metcalf nominated for her first Oscar tonight for "Lady Bird".  She looks nice in a simply cut, pale pink Christian Siriano dress.

8:30 pm: 94 year old Eve Marie Saint dressed in Landero presents the award for best costume to "Phantom Thread".  She's still beautiful.

Lesley Manville is nominated for her first Oscar tonight for "Phantom Thread."  Her Anne Valentine dress looks more like yarn or a shag carpet.

8:40 pm: Greta Gerwig looks nice in a yellow Rodarte gown and Laura Dern in a beautiful white Calvin Klein dress.

Sally Hawkins is wearing a loose fitting Armani dress with big shoulder pads. Wish it was a bit more form fitting.  She's nominated for her second time tonight for "The Shape of Water".

8:43 pm: Taraji P. Henson's slit in her black Vera Wang dress is a little too close for comfort to her privates.

Octavia Spencer is back her second year in a row for being nominated.  This year for best supporting actress in "The Shape of Water".  She is wearing a beautiful green Brandon Maxwell dress.

Timothee Chalamet looks handsome in an all white Berluti tux.  Matthew McConaughey is wearing a black Brioni tux with a maroon bow tie. Lin-Manuel Miranda is wearing a blue blazer.

8:55 pm: Great montage of the past 90 years in movies.

Mary J. Blige looks lovely in this classy white Versace dress.

9:08 pm: I don't love Lupita Nyong'o gold and black Versace dress. The beaded sash going across her chest looked like bullets for a mini chain gun.

Screenplay nominee Emily V. Gordon looks fabulous in a gold J. Mandel gown. I love the cut and simplicity of it. One of my Best dressed. She's nominated for her biopic "The Big Sick".

9:22 pm: Rita Morano dress is very ugly, and the skirt is very box-like.  Although I heard its the same dress she wore in 1962 to win her Oscar for "West Side Story".   Damn! Her body is still amazing at 86! and to still be able to fit into that dress, that's like fitting into your old Prom dress.  Best foreign language film "A Fantastic Women"

9:28 pm: Best supporting actress goes to Allison Janney for "I, Tonya".  She looks amazing in this red Reem Acra dress.  Reminds me of what Julia Roberts wore in "Pretty Woman".

9:41 pm: CoCo wins best animated film.

9:55 pm: Film editing goes to "Dunkirk"

Oh my goodness I really hate this pink boring and badly cut Calvin Klein dress on Saoirse Ronan.  What a disaster.  It does nothing for her. The haircut is too simple. I'm having flash backs from 1998 when Gwenyth Paltrow wore that horrible pink dress.  Such a miss. She is usually spot on with her dresses.

10:06 pm: A Bunch of actors are sneaking into a crowded movie theater to surprise fans. Margot Robbie and Emily Blunt give out candy.  Ansel Elgort and Lin-Mauel Miranda shoot a hot dog cannon. Fans are shocked.

10:10 pm: Maya Rudolph walks out holding her shoes.  Her Valentino dress is just awful. She has a funny moment but her dress looks like a red Santa sack. Yuck. and its a turtle neck...its like a sweater a grandma forgot to stop knitting and it ran too long.

Adam Rippon's Moschino tux is absolutely ridiculous with those leather straps.  Looks like a matching band member that lost his drum.

10:25 pm:  Ashley Judd looks amazing in a strapless plum Badgley Mischka dress, Annabella Sciorra looks great in black, and Salma Hayek's lilac Gucci dress is a bit much with all those gold chains. They take this time to address the cause "Times Up".

10:30 pm: Margot Robbie looks nice in a white Chanel dress. Although the shoulder drape looks a bit like Christmas garland. Best adapted screenplay goes to 89 year old James Ivory for "Call Me by Your Name".  He is one of the oldest award winners ever.

10:37 pm: Nicole Kidman's blue Armani dress with the huge over sized bow in her lap is quite ugly. Best original screenplay goes to Jordan Peele for "Get Out".

10:42 pm: Sandra Bullock is wearing a gold and black Louis Vuitton dress I am not crazy about. Best Cinematography goes to "Blade Runner: 2049"

11:05: Memorial moment presented by a blue Versace dress wearing Jennifer Gardner.  Eddie Vedder sings a Tom Petty song.  Remembering Jonathan Demme, John Heard, Martin Landau, Glenne Headly, Roger Moore, Sam Shepard, Don Rickles, Jerry Lewis and more.

11:13 pm: Where did Emma Stone think she was going today? To a job interview?  I hate this red Louis Vuitton blazer with the pink bow and black slacks. What a joke.  Best Director goes to Guillermo Del Toro for "The Shape of Water".  Very heart felt speech.  He gets choked up when quoting actor Jimmy Cagney.

11:20 pm: Jane Fonda looks timeless in her white Balmain dress.  I love the collar line. So sharp, so sophisticated. Stellar and Helen Mirren looks stunning in this simple Reem Acra blue dress with a huge sapphire necklace. These women don't age!! Best actor goes to Gary Oldman for his portrayal of Winston Churchill in "The Darkest Hour".  Endearing speech. says to "put the kettle on".

11:35 pm: Jennifer Lawrence looks stunning in this gold Dior dress.  So hot, looks like body armor. Jodie Foster is wearing a classic white suit and is hobbling on stage with crutches.  They make a joke that Streep wacked her.  Best Actress goes to a well deserved Frances McDormand for "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri".  cool speech. She asks all female nominees to stand up with her during her speech. She's wearing a very covered up black and gold dress, possibly Valentino.  She wears no make-up and is still one of the most beautiful woman there.  Such a breath of fresh air in plastic Hollywood.

11:40 pm: Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway (in the same Esteban Cortazar as last year) get a second chance to present Best Picture after last year's goof. This year's definite winner is "The Shape of Water".  Guillermo Del Toro double checks the envelope. He says he will not win the "jet ski" for shortest speech... haha

After running very over time...that's a wrap.  I better See you All Next Year. What fun.

P.S. Helen Mirren presented "Phantom Thread" costume designer Mark Bridges with the Jet Ski for the shortest acceptance speech.

BEST DRESSED: Jane Fonda
WORST DRESSED: Maya Rudolph

2018 Golden Globes Rant

75th Annual Golden Globes Ceremony
Sunday January 7, 2018: 8 pm
Hosted by Seth Meyers

All the women and most the men on the red carpet are wearing shades of black in unison for the "Time's Up" movement for women's rights. Including the fight for equality in pay and the stop of sexual misconduct.

8:00 pm: Show starts with Seth Meyers' opening speech. I Don't think he is that funny. I think Amy Poelher and Tina Fey are funnier. Even Ricky Gervais.

I don't know who Allison Williams is but she definitely has one of the ugliest dresses of the night.  She has a straight black dress with this giant orange beaded semicircle on her chest. Yuck. And this other girl named Alison Sudol is wearing a black dress with little colorful sewn patches on it.  Looks like she thinks she is at Coachella not the Golden Globes.

Wow! Debra Messing looks like a wreck.  First off her eyebrows are penciled on in a crazy arch so she looks like a movie villain.  Next..what is she wearing?.. a dress which has its crotch missing over a pair of slacks that are too big. Terrible look from designer Christian Siriano.

8:15 pm: Nicole Kidman wins best actress in a limited TV series for "Big Little Lies".  She is wearing a beautiful black Givenchy Haute Couture dress with delicate Chantilly lace on top. Love it.

Millie Bobby Brown from "Stranger Things" looks nice in her Calvin Klein dress. Those shoes are quite sparkly.  She is only 13 years old though,  I hope she stays grounded in this business.

8:20 pm: Sam Rockwell wins best supporting actor in a drama for his role in "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri". Very good movie.  His acting in it is outstanding.

I hate Jessica Biel's Dior Couture dress. It is pink with black sheer over it.  It has a half moonlike cut out across the front.  It looks childish and her lipstick is too pink. I don't get it! She is gorgeous but 99% of the time I hate everything she wears to award shows.  Her style is so odd.  I really wish she'd get a better, more sober stylist.

8:33 pm: Jennifer Aniston presents with Carol Burnett. Aniston's dress is quite a snooze fest.  Carol is age appropriately dressed. Love her. Elisabeth Moss wins for best actress in a TV drama for "The Handmaid's Tale".  I do not like her fully covered matronly black Dior Haute Couture dress with the silver collar. Way too old looking for her.

Loving the back of Dakota Johnson's $20,000 crystal-embroidered organza Gucci dress. Very detailed.

8:50 pm: Roseanne Barr and John Goodman present for best TV drama. Goodman looks great after losing some weight. Good for him. Roseanne has never looked better in her v-neck black dress. "Handmaid's Tale" wins best TV drama.

Ugg Pamela Adlon was so close to perfection in this black sequin lined skirt with the satin jacket.  I only wish the sequin top under the jacket was a tube top cut rather then a v-neck cut.

9 pm: Mariah Carey looks nice in her hour glass mermaid cut Dolce and Gabbana dress. Best score goes to "The Shape of Water".  Next award is presented by Kelly Clarkson. I hate this dress. The one gold sleeve, one black. Oh, its so ugly and so literal. yikes, another epic fail for designer Christian Siriano.  The award goes to "The Greatest Showman" for best song.

9:05 pm: Shirley McLaine looks great in her usual pants suit and Emma Stone's black lace dress is forgettable.  They present the award for Best actor in a comedy/musical film to James Franco for his role in "The Disaster Artist". The movie is based on an oddball movie made by a director named Tommy Wiseau. Franco calls Tommy on stage but stops him from talking into the microphone. Doesn't want him to steal Franco's thunder. Well, that and he would probably say some extremely odd stuff. After speech James Franco and his brother Dave are escorted back stage while Tommy is escorted back to his seat. Hilarious.

I'm not loving Salma Hayek's black one piece, tight, leotard looking Balenciaga dress.  She has looked so much better in the past

9:15 pm: J.K. Simmons looking dapper and at 59 Sharon Stone looks banging in this sexy black cut out dress. She has certainly aged nicely.  Wish she acted more.  They present for Best supporting actress in a limited series to Laura Dern for "Big Little Lies". Dern looks ageless in her sheer v-neck Armani Prive dress.

Not feeling Sarah Jessica Parker's Dolce and Gabbana dress.  It's like a hot mess of mixed matched fabrics. None of which make a complete dress.

9:30 pm: Kate Hudson presents for best supporting actress. Kate's body looks great in a very revealing v-neck sheer black Valentino Couture dress.  Allison Janney wins award for "I, Tonya".  This movie was very good and she had to play a very disturbed mother.  She looks stunning in this very sophisticated and detailed black and white Mario Dice cut out dress.  It looks more like a piece of art or a painting.

Janney is congratulated by "I, Tonya" star Margot Robbie whose Gucci dress I do not like.  Too much junk on the front.  Tonya Harding is actually sitting with them at their table.  She looks very refined in her black peek-a-boo waistline dress.

9:40 pm: Kirk Douglas and his daughter-in-law Catherine Zeta-Jones present award for Best film screenplay.  Lots of sheer tonight.  Zeta-Jones looks incredible in this Zuhair Murad Couture lace black dress. On the other hand Kirk Douglas looks ancient and rightly so cause he is 101 years old.  But do we need to keep rolling him out on stage during these awards?  Catherine is like 10 feet tall and he was so small and frail next to her.  They also didn't lower the mic when he talked which on top of him having had a stroke it made him very difficult to hear and understand. But whatever, best wishes to him.  He is one of the few stars left in which was in black and white films. "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" wins best screenplay and deservingly so.

9:45 pm: Ewan McGregor wins best actor in a limited TV series for "Fargo". Love him.

Shailene Woodley looks very sophisticated in this Ralph Lauren black and silver checkered turtle neck dress.  She kinda looks like a modern cowgirl.

10:10 pm: Reese Witherspoon's black Zac Posen dress is simple and boring. Oprah looks amazing in a perfectly fitted Versace off the shoulder dress. She wins the Cecil B. Demille Award for lifetime achievement.  She definitely deserves it since she has done so much to help others with her fame and fortune.  She makes a very moving speech that brings most the audience to tears.  I'm in awe of any woman that represents women in a powerful, positive and independent light without having ever married or had children.

Damn Halle Berry can not look any better than she does right now in this tiny sheer Zuhair Murad dress. Those legs....

10:20 pm: Guillermo Del Toro wins Best film director for "The Shape of Water". I am a fan of his dramas.

Viola Davis' Brandon Maxwell black dress is very underwhelming and I'm not loving the wild hair style.

10:35 pm: Jessica Chastain and Chris Hemsworth present for Best actress in a comedy film.  I like the black Armani Prive dress with the peak of silver under Chastain's arms that sweeps to her back.  Hemsworth looks handsome as hell.  Saoirse Ronan (pronounced Sir-Sha) wins award for "Lady Bird".  Her black and silver Versace dress looks a little "Star Trek" like.  I also think that her bleach blond hair washes out her already pale skin.

Love, love Alexis Bledel's black and white Oscar del la Renta look. I love the white top with the simple vine draped across it. Love the fitted black slacks with the sash on the hip. Great style. Very Audrey Hepburn.

10:40 pm: Michael Keaton and Alicia Vikander present for Best Comedy Film.  Vikander is wearing a beautiful Victorian style Louis Vuitton dress.  It is modest yet very appealing, Elisabeth Moss should take pointers from her stylist.  Greta Gerwig wins for "Lady Bird." Gerwig is wearing a simple one shoulder strap black dress with a swoop neck line. This is a very surprising and overwhelming moment for her. Congrats! (should have been nominated for best director.)

10:50 pm: Geena Davis and Susan Saradon (Thelma and Louise) reunite to present the award for Best actor in a film drama.  Davis is wearing a lace and sequin plunging neck line black dress and Saradon is dressed down in a Saint Laurent black tux.  She replaces the tie for a pair of black pumps.  Gary Oldman wins for "The Darkest Hour" in which he plays Winston Churchill.

11:00 pm: Angelina Jolie looks like she is wearing a 1970's black neglige (Versace) that she forgot to take off from her bad movie "By the Sea". Isabelle Huppert looks quite elegant in her high necked sequin dress.  She awards Frances McDormand for best actress in a film drama for her role as a bereaved mother in "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri".  I don't know what kind of black frock she is wearing but I will keep my comment to myself because her talent is untouchable.  She deserved every bit of that award.  Her speech is quite hilarious.

Mary J. Blige looks great in her one sleeved silver and black Alberta Ferretti dress. She was very good in "Mudbound" in which she was nominated for tonight.

11:10 pm: Barbra Streisand is wearing a simple velvet pant suit to present the last award for the night for Best film drama.  She also makes a note that no women directors were nominated tonight and that no women have won since herself in 1984 for "Yentl". That is shameful.  "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" takes home the Big prize for the night.

That's it from Hollywood, join me again for my Oscar Rant in March!
